The article of ways how to choose the most suitable active component
One fundamental advantage of buying the switch without management is its considerably lower price. If we necessarily must use the element administration, we must choose the correct level of the management. The direct correlation applies here: more functions featured = higher price.
The first option is the SMART Management. In this case the switch can be controlled by using the RS232 Serial Cable. The RS232 Serial Cable enables configuration of the basic switch functions like turning the ports ON or OFF, setting the port-oriented VLANs, or setting the Flow Management (slowing the data flow in order to prevent the buffer underrun in the switch and thus losing the data packets). Some of the switches with this type of management feature the Bandwidth Control, which enables more correct setup of the data communication speed for each port, as opposed to "only" the speed guarantied by the Ethernet standards. The improved versions of the SMART Switches are the so-called WebSMART switches. They feature the IP Address that can control this active element through the standard Web Browser. They are priced somewhere between the switches without the management and the switches with the management.
The highest administration level is the so-called Full Management. These switches have more methods of control using more parameters as opposed to the WebSMART Switches. In addition to the web interface control, the SNMP Management can be used (Simple Network Management Protocol). The switch maintains the table of parameters and their current values. These values can be requested by the SNMP Query of the software and subsequently imported and displayed in this SNMP application. The so-called MIB Table ensures the correct data import from the switch to the SNMP. Most manufacturers utilize the compatibility of the basic and generally known MIB Tables. For the functions not being recorded in any of the standard MIB Tables, the manufacturer will issue its own proprietary MIB Table. These MIB Tables are placed either on the CD media coming with the switches or on the web pages of the active element manufacturer. Another option is the remote administration through the CLI (Command Line), e.g. by using the TELNET. In this case the administrators are divided via the user names and passwords into the groups of the so-called Super Users (accounts with the maximum administration rights) and the Users (accounts with the lower administration rights). The configuration options of the full-management switches vary by the manufacturer, and the price again reflects the number of featured functions.
